“The labels themselves are brought from matchbox collectors, I only buy the ones that are of very little value to the collectors. I don’t want to upset the people that collect matchbox labels. I don’t wish to break up a rare set of labels by sending them to opposite sides of the world. Yet that could ignite an old challenge for the collectors.”

Inspiration is taken from found objects. Not only the objects but also the process used to make the components of the furnishings around our homes. These observations are reworked to create something new that can be repeatedly reproduced.

A development coming out of the The Fake Dane process.

Candlestick shade 2004

Uses the simple process of making lampshade frames. The wire works factory still has the original tooling forms for making elaborate lampshades. The frame is adapted to be able to hold a candle and is coated in black glass enamel.

Three pin standing lamp 2004

Metal folding lamp stand that utilises turned furniture components for its legs.

Frame-D 2005

Inspiration came from Framers, (people that make picture frames) they are still found locally in high streets. The Frame-D is a three dimensional frame, framing the space which a shelf creates. It can be hung on the wall either landscape or portrait depending on the size of the object that you wish to display.
The 1st edition was made using salvaged picture frames and are constructed using traditional framing techniques, as was the 2nd edition but with newwoods. The current 3rd edition utilises the growing number of automated routing machines that can be found in an increasing number of localised wood workshops. It is machine made using mdf with a vernier laminate. The 4th edition in development, is looking at foam moulding techniques used to create interior mouldings.

“Hr Larsen, what colour or colours do you feel are particularly Danish?”

“Blue and white.”

“Why and what sort of blue?”

“The blue of the sea in Skagen when it joins the white sky.”

“What sort of blue is it?”

“It is very bright blue.”

“Can you give some examples of other things that are the same blue?”

“It is like the blue of this pate [Leverpostej] packaging or letmælk cartons.”

Dear Hr Larsen
I have a close match to Leverpostej (pate) packaging. I have recently been to Skagen, it was grey and rained but during moments of sunshine it hinted and I can imagine the sea being blue and joining the white sky.

“Fru Daugaard, what colour or colours do you feel are particularly Danish?”

“Brick Red like the roof tops.”

“That is straightforward. Are the tiles of that colour found commonly in towns all over Denmark?”

“It’s all over. Also provincial towns have that red brick colour.”

Dear Fru Daugaard,
This looks much more red than some of the newer orange looking tiles. It is quite similar to the older weathered tiled roofs. From a distance this red might also look less red, everything looks different from a distance.

Jeremy Walton has been inspired by matchboxes since moving to Denmark. “The use of candles is an essential ingredient for what in Danish is called ‘Hyggeligt’ – cosy togetherness perfected by Scandinavians. The regular burning of candles results in a noticeable amount of matchboxes in peoples homes”

An original idea using two commonly found objects, a pillar candle and a household matchbox. The two items that have been in our daily lives for many years. The combination of the two fit both perfectly in function while also effortlessly in form. This combination creates a simple and instantly understandable object.
The Hygge-lys candle was originally made using standard hobby shop candle moulds and with a bit of luck the size of a standard matchbox fitted perfectly into the mould.

After selection by the designer Louise Campbell for the Danish Crafts ‘Defore Exhibition’ the production of the candle was moved from Jeremys Kitchen to a local candle maker. In 2004 the Candle was selected to represent Danish Crafts in the Crafts Collection 09 and subsequently selected as part of CC+ for MoMA.

The production of the candles has been upgraded slightly with use of specially made forms.

The candles are still hand made in Denmark on the east cost of Jutland by one of the best candle makers in Denmark. The candles have gained recognition across many countries since being a part of the MoMA retail collection and included in their widely distributed catalogue. This has all contributed in development of the candle collections international recognition.

“This is cool – This IS cool”
If you don’t care for the way their Christmas studio looks, you can fast forward to 1 minute 20 seconds. That is real simple.

Dec. 6: Elizabeth Mayhew from Real Simple magazine shows NBC “Today” show host Katie Couric some great gifts under $50 for everyone in your life.
Here’s a gift they haven’t seen before … a paraffin candle with a built-in matchbox. It’s functional, minimalist design keeps matches within easy reach and is sure to please modernists and traditionalists alike. Don’t worry — the wick runs out before it reaches the matches, so you won’t burn the house down.
