Honey I’m Home exhibition, Danish Design Centre, 2006.
Within a room, a three sided technical drawing of a chair and ceiling lamp is laid out on the side walls and the back wall using hooks. String is then used to draw within the space and the possibilities laidout by the original 2d drawing. A drawing of a chair forms where different peoples lines commonly overlap, it is hard to avoid. The overall drawing can support the weight of several people.

Plain MDF boxes with dowel pins protruding from the sides. The dowel pins are laid out to represent an archetype of a chair, standing lamp, and table. String is left attached initially to each piece. During the exhibition people drew on the pieces with the string. Each person leaving their own mark, filling in, making patterns, random tying, etc. One person would respond to another, creating often predictable ‘I am going to do something different’ or surprising details of concentration and commitment.

Shelf Portraits

Ten people were invited to give a selection of objects from their lofts or cellars storage, in exchange for a nominal payment, of about £15. The objects were to fit a shelf 1 meter long, 28 cm high and 15 cm in depth.
These objects were wrapped together with and onto the shelf, creating a shelf as a new object. The form is predicted by the person, the object becomes a portrait of the person.

Shrink plastic has been used to wrap a Jaguar E-type, the plastic has been peeled from the car like a facial mask. The plastic is made up of several layers melted together, creating a laminate that holds the form of the car. The form is obscured by negative space and distortion, similar to a dream the form comes and goes.

The material is polyolefin that shrinks when heated. The most common use of the material is for electrical insulation. Insulation is an important element of lighting that is most often disregarded and hidden.

The polyolefin comes as a tube and it is not readily available in very large diameters. For the lampshades we cut the tubes of polyoefin to create sheets, these were then sewn together to create a large tube near to the size and shape of the frame.

The frame together with the polyolefin was then boiled in the largest saucepans of water we could find. This was a delicate operation, one out three would split during boiling. The material is extremely soft when hot, coupled with the perforated holes from the sewing and the strength of the material shrinking it took practice and patients and more sewing. Once the material cools it becomes quite hard and robust.

It is possible to see in this photo, that the material does not shrink uniformly, it is quite charming that the green and yellow stripes are not precise, but they wobble. It depends where the polyolefin grips the inner material. It is very evident on this lamp, yet it also does it on the lampshades and stems.

The Bench Is Yours III

The organisers of Glentavej Plads felt the ‘Bench is yours’ concept fitted their park project and commissioned the starting block to be placed in the park. The local residents built the bench further.

The visual artists Marie Markman, Jesper Dyrehauge and Nis Rømer initiated the Glentavejplads project because of their interest in the design and functionality of public spaces. They have taken waste land and given it to the local people along with encouragement to take initiative.
About the project: In 2002 they stopped a 10 year rental contract of a private car dealer on the plot. Later had the old cars and junk removed in collaboration with people from the neighborhood, House for the Homeless and “Kvarterløft NV”. Exchange of ideas and debate with local residents then went on to implement the communal green space with the help of people from the area.

The Bench is yours, build further.

Bench three is a particularly charming bench, it is solid and direct in its approach to trying to be a bench. With less creative designers, but a variety of locals passing by and getting involved, has meant that it is not challenging the concept of a bench, but just trying to be one.

Starting with an archetypal chair form, waste and found wood is added on to the bench following the archetype of a basic chair, needing legs, seat and back. Any one can add to the bench with the waste wood. It is a democratic project that cannot be designed in advance. We create the base, there after it is up to the people that use the park to continue where the last person stopped.

Built at Paustian in Copenhagen as part of the ‘Derfor’ exhibition. in association with danish Crafts and curated by Louise Campbell.

Starting with an archetypal chair form, waste and found wood is added on to the bench following the archetype of a basic chair, needing legs, seat and back. Any one can add to the bench with the waste wood. It is a democratic project that cannot be designed in advance. We create the base, there after it is up to the people that use the park to continue where the last person stopped. From initial experiments in scale models we have now started several benches in public spaces around the city and the experiment continues.

60% of bench II was constructed in the garden of our studio by friends. From here it was transported and reconstructed and continued at Paustian.
