Islands Brygge the Manhatten of Copenhagen.

Around the globe in 80 chairs, by Jeremy Walton.

GlobalMadeLocal Reaches Islands Brygge.

Islands Brygge has often been referred to as the Manhattan of Copenhagen. It is the home of Københavns MøbelSnedkeri, situated in a road that is probably the last outpost of inner city industry in the area. The lease is short, but while it lasts, the small overlooked road is a charming blot on the landscape of polished glass office buildings and flats that don’t just have parking facilities for cars, but for boats as well. Allerød, or as the locals prefer it in English, Alleryd.

Around the globe in 80 chairs, by Jeremy Walton.

GlobalMadeLocal Reaches Allerød.

The journey starts in the Danish town of Allerød, or as the locals prefer to write it, Alleryd. [1] There has been much debate in Allerød over the English spelling of Alleryd, with the majority in favour of the spelling that gives the more Danish phonetic pronunciation.
From the start you get the sense, that the people of Alleryd have a high regard for details.

About Jeremy Walton’s journey around the globe in 80 chairs.

Around the globe in 80 chairs by Jeremy Walton.

Start of a long slow journey.

Why do projects need to be completed instantly?

To develope 80 chairs across the globe following the GlobalMadeLocal ideology. Chair is just a term for furniture, they might not always be chairs.

80 pieces working flat out, could take about 8 years to complete, allowing for public holidays. But the chance of working flat out is not an option I have, so I will be lucky if I ever complete the journey, but who is in a rush to finish.

Line Drawings 0007

Line Drawings at the Dansih Design Centre. Design by Jeremy Walton, Ditte Hammerstrøm and Claus BjerreDesign by Claus Bjerre, Ditte Hammerstrøm and Jeremy Walton. 2006.
Honey I’m Home exhibition, Danish Design Centre, 2006.
Within a room, a three sided technical drawing of a chair and ceiling lamp is laid out on the side walls and the back wall using hooks. String is then used to draw within the space and the possibilities laidout by the original 2d drawing. A drawing of a chair forms where  different peoples lines commonly overlap, it is hard to avoid. The overall drawing can support the weight of several people.

Line Drawings 0004 to 0006

Line Drawings at the Röhsska Museum. Design by Jeremy Walton, Ditte Hammerstrøm and Claus Bjerre Design by Claus Bjerre, Ditte Hammerstrøm and Jeremy Walton. 2005.
Plain MDF boxes with dowel pins protruding from the sides. The dowel pins are laid out to represent an archetype of a chair, standing lamp, and table. String is left attached initially to each piece. During the exhibition people drew on the pieces with the string. Each person leaving their own mark, filling in, making patterns, random tying, etc. One person would respond to another, creating often predictable ‘I am going to do something different’ or surprising details of concentration and commitment.

These objects were wrapped together with and onto the shelf, creating a shelf as a new object. The form is predicted by the person, the object becomes a portrait of the person.

Shrink plastic has been used to wrap a Jaguar E-type, the plastic has been peeled from the car like a facial mask. The plastic is made up of several layers melted together, creating a laminate that holds the form of the car. The form is obscured by negative space and distortion, similar to a dream the form comes and goes.

Culture Shrink

Culture Shrink. Design by Jeremy Walton Ditte Hammerstrøm and Claus BjerreDesign by Claus Bjerre, Ditte Hammerstrøm and Jeremy Walton. 2003.
The material is polyolefin that shrinks when heated. The most common use of the material is for electrical insulation. Insulation is an important element of lighting that is most often disregarded and hidden.

The polyolefin comes as a tube and it is not readily available in very large diameters. For the lampshades we cut the tubes of polyoefin to create sheets, these were then sewn together to create a large tube near to the size and shape of the frame.
